Here is a very interesting and fascinating paper from 2013 which discusses the viability of 0-conf payments or "fast payments" on the Bitcoin network, analyzing the importance of node connectivity/topography, and how merchants can avoid double spends.

Bitcoin Cash May 15th is approaching fast. Time to upgrade your node if you didn't already

Hi all,
according to cashnodes.io there's still a significant amount of nodes that have not been upgraded to a version compatible with the upcoming Bitcoin Cash May 15th.
This is the breakdown by clients implementations of the number of nodes that need an update:
If you are operating one of those nodes please upgrade.

Interesting paper: "Investigation of the Potential for Using the Bitcoin Blockchain as the World's Primary Infrastructure for Internet Commerce". Talks about huge blocks, "Fast Payment Networks"/0-conf double spend prevention, and "clustered" nodes consisting of multiple Nvidia + Xeon phi machines.

How to sync the entire block chain in a couple of hours

Maybe this is well known, but I didn’t know.
If you know a fast bitcoin node, there are two different options that you can use to make bitcoin connect to it: addnode and connect. Addnode connects to the given node at startup, then proceeds as usual, finding new nodes in the bitcoin network. You just place addnode=ipnumber on its own line in bitcoin.conf.
However, I found that the sync will be several times faster if you use the "connect" option instead.
Then bitcoin will only connect to the given node, and no others. It seems that additional slow nodes will slow you down even if you're connected to a fast node. I’m not sure why. So if you’re doing the initial sync, just use connect, and feel free to use my node if you want. It is 100 mbit which means you’ll be CPU-limited even if several (20?) people use it at once.
Add connect to bitcoin.conf so it looks something like:
rpcuser=bitcoinrpc rpcpassword=*****your*password***** connect=node0.xbtnorth.com
After you’re done syncing, or almost done, just remove the connect line and restart bitcoin.

Bitcoin’s blockchain, for example, is over 150GB in size and growing. This makes it impossible to install on a mobile phone. Mobile applications can’t synchronize an entire multi-gigabyte blockchain. Other problems with today’s mobile applications include end users who are ill equipped to reliably maintain secret keys over a long period of time. Mobile applications are also subject to ... Most Bitcoin nodes also act as a Bitcoin client, which allows transactions to be sent to the network. This means a node acts as your personal interface with the Bitcoin network as a whole. Running a node ensures that your Bitcoin transactions are verified and sent to whoever you’re transacting with. This puts the power to send uncensorable money across the world or across the street in your ... To build applications on Blockchains such as Ethereum or Bitcoin, you need to have a running Node to access the blockchain.But these nodes are difficult to manage and require a dedicated device and resources. Almost all full nodes also help the network by accepting transactions and blocks from other full nodes, validating those transactions and blocks, and then relaying them to further full nodes. Most full nodes also serve lightweight clients by allowing them to transmit their transactions to the network and by notifying them when a transaction affects their wallet. If not enough nodes perform ...
